The artwork on this website represents a slice in time, the midst of a process with an uncertain outcome. I don't know why I keep painting but I know I have to and there is a reason - it's part of an evolution maybe. Musicians play scales, athletes practice movements specific to their sports, so maybe I'm doing my painterly free-throws and etudes.
I grew up on the Great Plains and emerged out of my undergrad art major painting representationally with heavy influences from Richard Diebenkorn, Eric Fischl, and Matisse. I was drawn also to painting in a large format. As time went on and life developed it became necessary to scale down my work and to draw from what was going on around me and the places I found myself in. A reflective process also emerged that likely has something to do with reminiscence (painting important places) but also practicing being in the moment (plein air).
My current body of work encompasses plein air and studio painting, drawing, and some printmaking. I think my plein air painting is related to documenting the process of seeing, practicing the craft of mixing color, and finding a sense of place in the alchemy of mixing color and representing form, light, and movement.
The studio work follows a train of thought related to a sense of place not just in relation to visual elements but also the emotional and physical experience of being in those places. Sometimes the feeling is one of awe as in the paintings of the Rocky Mountains. Sometimes the intent is to find and articulate a particular psychological or experiential tone that can be quiet, bombastic, dramatic, or contemplative as in some of the nocturnes and remembered landscapes.
The works on paper range from exploration of mark and color, to more conceptual pieces that at this point in time seem to be about the accumulation of knowledge and understanding, or about making as a way of knowing (Accumulations).
Because I am not a professional artist (I'm an art therapist professionally), I am not currently represented by a gallery so if you are interested in my work, please reach out via email. As I get the website ramped up, look forward to blog posts and emails updating you about painting adventures both large and small, and probably some mental meanderings about whatever is on my mind about my artistic practice.
